I am a total sucker for the promotions that the various Spanish newspapers run. Yes, it’s a naked attempt to increase readership, but there are often some great deals to be had!

Today’s offer with Levante (my favorite Valencian newspaper) is good enough that I felt like sharing. For €3,95 you can buy aviator sunglasses (plus the cost of the paper). This is a promotion with MultiOpticas, a well-known glasses store, so the quality is not bad — certainly worth €4!
There will be a new design every Friday — all for the same price. And also on Fridays, you get a free little cookbook with recipes from the accomplished Spanish chef Óscar Torrijos. Today’s is about tapas.
The other papers, too, have promotions almost constantly. Thursdays you can get a good DVD for €1 with El Pais. Earlier this year, they did a series of travel guides throughout Spain. I think it’s El Mundo which gives out free CDs of Beethoven’s symphonies. It’s almost to the point that if you go to a kiosk and don’t walk away with a DVD or book along with your newspaper, you’re doing something wrong!
What are your favorite promotions? I know that the American newspaper industry is having a very rough time… is the same happening here?

Yea, well, do they have sunglass clip-ons? I think not.

Yes, wait a little and you will see M&A in Spanish media:
* PRISA (El Pais, CincoDias, CuatroTV, Digital+ Sat, cadena SER radio, 40 Principales, M80, …) is in advanced conversations with MEDIAPRO (Publico, La Sexta TV)
* VOCENTO (ABC, Las Provincias, Correo, Punto Radio, LPTV, …) is downsizing
* EPI (Levante, Informacion,.. ) is in talks with Grupo ZETA (El Periodico, Interview, …)
