We Shall Never Forget Thee, David Villa!

Hmph, try not to look too happy, bub

Death. Taxes. The departure of David Villa. There are just a few things in life that are unavoidable, and the dreaded day has finally arrived in Valencia. An era is over. But everyone knew it was coming, so it’s better just to remember the good times. The world’s best striker no longer plays for Valencia, but for the world’s best team. There’s something fitting about it. Sigh.

My buddy’s girlfriend just left him for another guy. It’s rough. But the other guy is really cool, successful and good looking. Totally the right move, from her perspective. And as much as I want to comfort my pal, she was too good for him. It was just a matter of time.

So, Mr. Villa, we won’t be angry. At least it’s Barcelona and not Real Madrid! At least you’re staying in Spain, and not being shipped off to the Premier League! Best of luck in the future, hope you’re happy and win all sorts of championships, and blah blah blah.

Valencia 3 – Osasuna 0

Sunday afternoon. The sun was shining bright, and it felt like Spring had finally arrived. What better way to ring in the long-awaited new season, than a trip to the Mestalla?

The good guys were in fine form and, despite a listless first half, managed to put three goals into the net. The first was a ridiculous heel kick by Joaquin, that caught everyone off guard. Villa sealed the deal in the final moments of the game with two scores, the second a penalty.

With the victory, Valencia goes 8 points clear of Sevilla & Mallorca, and has all but sealed up 3rd place and a berth in next year’s Champions League. What a turn-around after the terrible season last year!

Thursday, los Che are traveling to Madrid to battle Atlético in the Europa League. It’ll be a tough match; the first game in Valencia was a 2-2 tie, meaning Atlético now has the advantage.

I was THIS close to David Villa!!

If I stuck out my arm I could have touched him! David Villa graced the Plaza de Pilar with his presence today for the Plantà — Mahou beer sponsored him to come out and help set up a couple of the pieces. I just stood there, along with the rest of his crazed fans, screaming and crying and peeing myself. Yeah, I was a mess, but at least I didn’t leap upon his back like a monkey and cover his head with kisses — and I was seriously thinking about it.

Today’s mascletà took place under the bright, and much-needed sunlight. While the rest of Spain suffers catastrophic snow and rain, Valencians were lucky to enjoy their fiesta in the warmth of the sun. The day’s mascletà (company A. Zarzoso) wasn’t incredibly impressive, but maybe just suffered in comparison with yesterday’s bombastic success.

Sorry for this bit of non-Valencia related celebration… but WOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!

The USA beat Spain 2-0 in the confederations cup semi-final last night, and we’re headed toward our first FIFA Final ever! I still can’t believe it.

Fine, it’s just the Confederations Cup, but what an incredible result. It was the first time in 35 games that mighty Spain was defeated. And I guess you can consider it marginally related to Valencia — David Villa and Juan Mata both were playing and got to taste the power of los EEUU first hand. Haha! That’s for giving us such a stupid abbreviation!
