Estoreta-2010

What little troopers! The kids marching in this morning’s Cant d’Estorta had to brave the nasty weather which has put a real damper on Fallas.  From the warmth of a cozy cafe, we watched cute, shivering children re-enact famous scenes from history. "Brrrr", I thought, eating my piping hot patatas bravas, "those poor, freezing, ADORABLE kids!"

Many of the mini-floats were great, but we especially loved the hot air balloons. Good job kids!  It’s never too young to learn that art is all about suffering and misery.

Fallas 2009: Último Mascletà

Add to Flipboard Magazine.
Mascleta-Close

The final mascletà of Fallas 2009 was shot off by they company of Ricardo Caballer, and what can we say? If you were anywhere within a 60-mile radius, you already know that it didn’t disappoint. But you did have to be present to see the colorful streamers explode over the crowd — a trick which was new to us.

In a day filled with noise and explosions, this was an incredible experience. If you only went to one mascletà, I hope it was this one.

Nit del Foc: Fallas 2009

Add to Flipboard Magazine.

The Nit de Foc (Night of Fire) spectacular in the Turia riverbed is probably the year’s most anticipated fireworks show in Valencia.

The show was the work of the company Ricardo Caballer, who’ve been operating since 1888 and were also in charge of Fallas’ final mascletà. They must be the most important pyrotechnic company in the region.

Over 4000 kilograms of gunpowder was used in a show that lasted over 20 minutes, and consisted of one highlight on top of another. According to the newspapers, over 500,000 people showed up to watch the fireworks, which started at 1:30 in the morning. That’s over half a million… difficult to believe. I would doubt that a single one left disappointed.
