Fallas 2010: Sueca – 4th Place

Add to Flipboard Magazine.

A large Valencian man sleeps on the ground, dreaming of the world, in the monument of Sueca-Literato Azorín, titled “Planet Fallas”. Around and on top of him, we find characters from Scotland, the US, Mexico, Japan, India and other countries.

This was a really fun monument; the portrayal of different cultures always provides a lot of opportunity for clever humor (and some good ‘ole Fallas-style racism). We saw a mutli-cutural paella competition, Nadal vs. Federer with an old Fallera judge, and various world leaders. There was a lot to look at.

This was the first monument my parents saw, and they loved it. For the commission, it marked a major improvement on their 9th place 2009 finish.

This year, the competition for the Best Lights Display award has heated up! Two other commissions, Cuba-Literato Azorín and Cuba-Puerto Rico are challenging the perennial victors Sueca-Literato Azorín. “Enough of the dominance”, the upstart commissions cry! “This year, you won’t have it so easy!”

But… yes, they will. Sueca is going to win again this year, easily. Good show Cuba-LA & Cuba-PR but, you don’t have a prayer. Sueca continues to occupy a stratosphere all its own — no other lights display in Valencia comes close to matching its brilliance.

We definitely appreciate the effort, though, and Cuba-LA’s lights are beautiful — a deep blue illuminating the street. The intensified competition makes a visit to the coolest, and most Fallas-crazy neighborhood in Valencia even more enticing.

Can’t wait for March 15th when the main days of Fallas begin? Why not head down to Calle Sueca and count all light bulbs and LEDs? That should keep you busy until mid-March.

The inauguration of the lights is set for March 6th at 9pm (as far as we know — if you can confirm this, please leave a comment). Want to see the the lights of Calle Sueca from Fallas 2009 again?

Initial walk through the insane Fallas lights of Calle Sueca

On the 7th of March we had gone to see the turning on of the street lights. It was so packed we didn’t dare to squeeze ourselves through Calle Sueca once they were lit  .But we came back. Enjoy our video of the lights and try not to think about La Crisis.

Valencia Fallas: The Street Lights of Calle Sueca 2009

March 7th was a busy day.  After the daily 2pm mascletà, and the special Gran Mascletà Napolitana at the beach, we mustered our remaining strength and went down to Ruzafa.  At 9pm, they were turning on the famous street lights of Calle Sueca.

There was a large, boisterous crowd gathered and right before 9pm, it was packed extremely tight. Someone came on a megaphone to say that the lighting was being pushed back 15 minutes, and the crowd groaned and booed.  Good-naturedly, of course.  A man next to us dropped to his knees in a mock display of agony and pleading.
At some time after 9:15, majestic orchestral music started and the streetlights were lit, one section at a time.  First the blues, then the columns, and finally the crown.  When viewing it all lit up together, it’s hard not to be impressed, but the "lighting show" was cheesy, and left a lot to be desired.  And then they did it /twice/.  For the TV or something.  The crowd was too busy laughing to "ooh" and "ahh" with the appropriate respect the second time through.

The good thing is, you didn’t have to attend the lighting to fully enjoy the lights.  Until the 19th, you have the chance to walk down to Ruzafa and check them out.  And grab a few buñuelos from the stand of La Albaceteña while you’re there — they were delicious.
