Fallas 2010: La Cremà

Add to Flipboard Magazine.

fire-dance

Filmed with the Sanyo VPC – CS 1 (super tiny) available here: USA, UK, Deutschland and Spain

On Friday night, after a day full of bad weather and a month full of noise, Fallas 2010 finally came to its fiery end at la Cremà. The destruction of Almirante Cadarso’s Fat Cat towering monument structure with its huge paper machè ladies smoking cigarettes and tightly packed residential neighborhood made for a dramatic display.

There’s no more incredible end to a city festival than the Cremà. The burning embers, raging fire, thick black smoke and gigantic structures crashing to the ground in flames make for a terrifying and unique experience.

I’ve often tried to explain La Cremà to friends who’ve never seen it, but it’s impossible. There aren’t words which can accurately convey the insanity of it all. You tell people it’s crazy, and can see what they’re thinking: "Yeah, I’m sure it’s very crazy. But crazy within reason". No! You aren’t understanding! It’s really completely crazy! Such a thing shouldn’t be legal! The burning of these gigantic 3 story monuments in a densely packed neighborhood, with thousands of onlookers mere meters away, is a crazy thing and a terrible idea.

Over 700 constructions around the city are burnt within a few hours of each other, which makes you think that a tragedy is just a matter of time. But, there are experienced firefighters on hand, with a long history free of major accidents: a fact which is comforting but doesn’t completely erase the terror of La Cremà — the perfect end to Las Fallas, surely one of the world’s most unique and crazy events.

This is the final event of Fallas, but we’re going to be posting things in reverse order… so, stay tuned for photos and videos of the Cabalgata del Fuego, the final mascletàs, Nit de Foc, the monuments and more. We took literally thousands of pictures, so it’s taken awhile to get through them.

How Many Fallas Monuments Are There?

Add to Flipboard Magazine.
fallas-2009

Special Section: Almirante Cadarso-Conde Altea

Anyone walking through Valencia the next few days won’t be able to avoid noticing the statues which have been placed on nearly every street corner. Some of them are big, others huge, and a few are colossal. These are the Fallas monuments — artful creations made of Styrofoam and wood, which stand out as much for their sudden ubiquity in Valencia as their frequently stunning beauty and wicked sense of humor.

And after 4 days, they’re set on fire. All of them*

They seem to be everywhere, but how many Fallas figures actually are there around the city? By my count, 382 are in competition, separated into 17 categories. A quick breakdown:

Special Section: 15 monuments (including the Ayuntamiento monument, which is the only one paid for by the city, and which isn’t in competition)
Primera A: 16 Monuments Primera B: 21 Monuments
Segunda A: 22 Monuments Segunda B: 22 Monuments
Tercera A: 23 Monuments Tercera B: 23 Monuments
Cuarta A: 23 Monuments Cuarta B: 22 Monuments
Quinta A: 22 Monuments Quinta B: 22 Monuments
Sexta A: 24 Monuments Sexta B: 25 Monuments Sexta C: 23 Monuments
Séptima A: 25 Monuments Séptima B: 26 Monuments Séptima C: 28 Monuments

All of the monuments are in competition within their division, with prize money ranging from €18,000 (for the Special Section) to €180 (for the winner of Séptima C). We’re going to be posting pictures of as many of the monuments as we can, and will try and indicate which section each belongs to.

*All of the Fallas monuments are set aflame during the Cremà on the night of the 19th, except for one. This lucky statue won a popular vote, winning it reprieve from fiery destruction.

The Fallas 2009 poster is available now!

If you frequent our blog, you’ve probably guessed that we love two things above all else: Fallas and Photography.

We’ve decided to marry the two and, very soon, plan on offering an exclusive Fallas 2009 poster.

Juergen, whose unique and captivating work graces our blog, is a professional photographer and a die-hard Fallas aficionado. Once the plantà has occurred and all the monuments are up, we plan on crisscrossing the city to visit every single one. We’ll then put together an original poster featuring all 14. It’s going to be sweet… I’m pretty positive of that.

If you’d like to be alerted once we’ve completed and have begun to sell the poster, send a short email to , and we’ll add you to the notification list. Or, just keep your eye on this blog!

Mascletà March 10th – Fallas 2009

Add to Flipboard Magazine.

Today’s mascletà was staged by the pyrotechnic company Borredá, and from our vantage point, was kind of scary. Like War of the Worlds, or something. We got rained on by firecracker refuse and, midway through, a stray firework was shot into the crowd about 15 meters away.

The most surreal thing is that people are clapping and cheering while this is going on. Isn’t the natural response to scream and seek shelter?

Here couple of images planting of the La Merced Falla:
