One of the most photogenic events of the Semana Santa Marinera is the morning mass at the Malvarossa beach, on Good Friday. Only for early risers!
Normally, we’re definitively not early risers, but today we made an exception, and were at the beach in time for the ceremony. People begin gathering at the beach at 8:30am. At around 9am, a small procession led by a brotherhood clad in black robes with pointy hoods arrives at the beach, carrying our old buddy Crucified Jesus. Every so often, the procession would stop and a woman would dab a cloth at the bloody wound on Jesus’ side.
The beach service was short and sweet. Crowded, but because of the weather and early hour, not overly so. There was some praying, some singing, and some throwing of holy items into the ocean. Even for the non-religious, this was a beautiful and serene event. If all masses were held on the beach, I’d probably sign up.
Very interesting. Great pictures, but the video was irritating….3 seconds of video, then a seven second delay. I can’t wait for the Black Hood Club to visit America on a cultural tour. They could start (and end) in Macon, Georgia.
